Groundhog Day is here. Everyday, I give my son a sight word booklet to complete. It helps him with his reading words and provides opportunities to read and write at the same time in a fun way. When Groundhog Day was coming, I realized I wanted him to still complete his sight word booklet, but I also wanted to teach him a bit about Groundhog Day.
Learning about the groundhog legend and practicing literacy brings a mix of reading and science to this mini unit. Not only does it make reading a fun activity, but it also teaches our children that reading teaches our children.
Here is a booklet for you to download:
With a mixture of reading and science, the unit contains practice of the sight word “there”, a short story about the holiday, prediction, copying sentences and writing a sentence using the Groundhog Day theme. Download this little booklet for your primary level children to put together while they learn about the groundhog. I used this with my special needs son who is older, but is also on the primary reading and academic level.

Some are funny Groundhog Day books to read, and others are more factual. Either way, kids will enjoy reading about the furry little groundhog, and learning more about this minor day on our seasonal calendar.
Here are some Pinterest groundhog art projects too!
